In my classroom, I implemented the CAFE system for ELA.  I taught my students mini lessons on how to use CAFE strategies and on topics covered in our fourth grade curriculum.  Students and I worked together to create goals for them to work towards in their independent and small group work time.  I utilized a binder to keep track of students goals and progress. I met with students both individually and in small groups.  The small groups were flexible, based on students who had the same goal or reading level.  My goal board, where students wrote their current goal down on a Post It, helped students with similar goals find each other for help and support, if they weren’t already being pulled into a strategy group together.
